11184 is the number the Little Rock Animal Shelter assigned to a 1 year old, born January 13th, 2009, Male Tri Cavalier. We're trying to decide a name for him that fits. For now we're using Buddy. That comes from us saying, "Hey little Buddy", and he comes running right over. He answers the same way to just "Buddy". He's tested heartworm positive at the shelter and they thought he also has kennel cough. He'll be treated for the kennel cough first with antibiotics, then the treatment will begin for the heartworms. He's been to our vet and is on antibiotics with isolation for at least the next two weeks to clear up the kennel cough. The tests for baby heartworms was negative, but it takes 7 to 10 days to get the results back for adult heartworms. In the mean time he has been started on HeartGard to prevent the baby one's from coming back. We'll see what the result is for them at his two week checkup for the kennel cough. He did test positive for hookworms and is being treated for them also. After his 2 week checkup, he is clear of the kennel cough. We will continue with the HeartGard for two months and then start the treatment for heartworms. He starts his treatment with the Ivermectin on March 8th. Two treatments 30 days apart, then another 30 days for a heartworm recheck. If that's clear, then we start looking for a forever home for him. He is a vocal little boy, well not so little at 17.5 lbs. When he gets excited, he does bark. We've been working on it, but mainly all the other issues, House training, food aggression, sit, come, etc. We don't think he'd ever had any obedience training, even though he was a year old. He does know how to snuggle. He does like to give nose kisses and get on your lap. He was a Velcro dog to my wife for about the first 5 weeks. He will not be a good dog for people that have young children, less that 5 years old, or young children around often. When he's around my 3 year old grandson, he growls and barks when he's running around, but has never bit or rushed at him. When my grandson settles down he will even go over to him for petting. He got his first heartworm treatment March 9th. He's doing well and doesn't seem to be having any problems from it. Now the fun begins. Trying to keep a 1 year old active boy from getting too active. :-) He was a bit groggy for a couple of days after he got home from the Vet's, but he's doing well now. Buddy's taken the enforced restriction very well. He gets his next treatment in April. April 10th, he got his last round of shots from the Vet. He had to stay there three days, since the second round is two shots. Boy was he glad to see us. Now he'll have to go back in 5 weeks, May 18th, and have a full heartworm test for larva and adults run. That takes 7 to 10 days to get the results back. If the results are good, he should be ready for adoption by the 28th. He was taken back to the Vet on 31st of May. Hooray!! He's got a clean bill of health. Now we're looking for someone without young children, 7 or younger, that has a little patience to finish his training. Buddy's gotten a lot better around my grandson. He doesn't growl or bark around him, he just goes off away from him and comes back when he settles down. We're now looking for a good home for him. It needs to be one that doesn't have children/grandchildren, etc. below the age of 7 years old, or that he will be watched while around them. Buddy has found his forever home. It's with a nice couple and a Boykin spaniel "Brother".
